Why a liquid oil still blocks a pipe
Coconut oil looks like a liquid in a warm kitchen or in a jar you just heated. But it sets solid at normal room temperature, and the pipes under your sink and in your yard are often cooler than the kitchen. The oil cools on contact with the pipe wall and clings there.
Each time more oil goes down, it adds another layer. Food scraps, soap and hair stick to that sticky surface, and the pipe narrows. The first sign is usually a slow sink. The final sign is a full backup, usually at a bad time. A plumber can scour that layer off with a hydro jetting pass, but prevention costs nothing.
How common fats and oils compare in a drain
| Fat or oil | State in a cool pipe | Drain risk | Where it should go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coconut oil | Solid | High | Wipe out the pan, put it in the trash |
| Bacon grease and lard | Solid | High | Cool it in a can, then trash |
| Butter and shortening | Solid | High | Wipe and trash |
| Olive and vegetable oil | Liquid but sticky | Moderate, builds with food scraps | Cool, absorb with paper towel, trash |
| Used fryer oil | Varies | High in volume | Cool, seal in a container, trash or a local disposal site |
Liquid oils still coat pipe walls and trap debris. None of them belongs in the drain.
Mauldin households, pipes and who handles what
Mauldin had an estimated 31,465 residents in July 2025 per the Census, with 68.0 percent of homes owner-occupied and about 2.30 people per household. With most homes owned by the people living in them, the pipe from the kitchen to the street is usually the homeowner's to maintain and pay for.
The City of Mauldin has a Sewer Division within Public Works that handles the city mains. If grease backs up in the street main or a manhole, the Public Works main line is (864) 289-8904, and after hours it is (864) 289-8900. For anything between your house and the main, call a licensed plumber.

What to do with coconut oil instead
- 1
Wipe before you wash
Use a paper towel on pans and spoons to remove oil before they hit the sink.
- 2
Let leftover oil cool
Coconut oil will solidify on its own. Scrape it into a lidded container or old jar.
- 3
Trash it
When the container is full, seal it and drop it in the trash. Do not flush it or pour it outside near the foundation.
- 4
Handle body-care uses the same way
Oil pulling should end in the trash, not the sink. Skin and hair oils rinsed in the shower are small but they add up over time.
- 5
Use a strainer
A mesh sink strainer catches the scraps that give oil something to cling to.
What builds up inside the pipe over months
Grease rarely blocks a drain in one dose. It forms a soft, waxy coat, then picks up coffee grounds, rice and hair. The coat thickens until only a narrow channel is left, and then a small piece of food closes it.
That is why a clog can feel sudden. The pipe was slowly narrowing for months. A plumber with a camera can see the wall and tell you whether it is a thin film or a thick plug, which decides whether a cable, a jet or a repair makes sense.
But I only pour a spoonful, is that okay?
A teaspoon rinsed away with hot soapy water and a lot of running water will often pass through. That does not make it a good habit. The risk is cumulative, and small amounts from multiple people over months can form a hard layer.
At about 2.3 people per Mauldin household, the quantities may look small. But a tablespoon of fat a day is roughly 11 pounds in a year. A rough or sagging old pipe will catch it faster than smooth new PVC.
Myths about coconut oil and plumbing
You may have read that coconut oil lubricates pipes or helps clear them. It does not. A slick feel in your hands says nothing about what happens when the oil cools in a trap.
Another myth says that a spoonful with dish soap is fine because soap breaks up fat. Dish soap helps the oil travel a bit farther, but it does not remove it from the system. The fat cools further down the line and builds up there. The only reliable habit is keeping it out of the sink in the first place.
Skip the boiling water trick
Boiling water can soften a plastic pipe joint or crack an old porcelain sink, and it only moves the oil downstream. If your drain is already slow from grease, a plumber can clear it with a cable or with a water-jet tool that scours the pipe wall. Jetting cleans the walls instead of poking a hole through the clog.
Call a plumber if you see these signs
- More than one drain is slow or gurgling at the same time.
- Water backs up in a tub or floor drain when you run the kitchen sink.
- A rancid smell comes from the sink or the cleanout.
- Plunging clears the drain, but it clogs again within a week.
- You know a lot of oil went down and the drain is running slower.
If the clog is in the yard line or a main, sewer line cleaning is the usual fix. The dispatch line also covers Greenville and Fountain Inn.
Coconut oil and drain questions from Mauldin homeowners
Call the City of Mauldin Sewer Division at (864) 289-8904, or (864) 289-8900 after hours. The city maintains mainlines and manholes in the right-of-way. If the problem is in your own lateral, a licensed plumber is the one to call.
Yes. It melts around 76 F and solidifies below that. Once it cools in the pipe, it turns waxy and traps other debris.
Hot water just carries the oil further downstream before it cools and sets. Put it in the trash instead.
Fractionated coconut oil stays liquid at room temperature, but it is still an oil. It still coats pipe walls and traps food and hair, so it still belongs in the trash.
It can, since fats float and form a scum layer inside a tank. If your home is on a septic system instead of the city sewer, keep all fats out of the drain. If you are unsure which you have, check your sewer bill or ask a plumber.
Small clogs may clear with a plunger or a small auger. Hardened grease deep in a line needs a cable or water jet. If it keeps coming back, have the line scoped.
A little body oil rinses through with plenty of water and soap. A heavy coating from oil treatments is different, so wipe off excess with a towel before you step into the shower and use a hair catcher.
